Coventry, England, February 27, 1998 (PRNewswire. NET) -- The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) announced that it has suspended its use of Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor, and sildenafil citrate is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“Although sildenafil citrate has been approved by the UK regulatory authorities for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, we feel that we need to take a responsibility for our patients’ safety,” said Janet Woodcock, Medical Director of DHSC. “The decision to deny the approval of Viagra® and sildenafil citrate to our patients is a major step forward for the Department of Health and Social Care.”
DHSC said it has received over 20,000 requests for Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) from patients since April 1998.
“We are pleased to see that we have accepted our patients’ concerns,” said Woodcock. “We are committed to helping our patients get the best possible results from their medications and the medicines they use. The DHSC is now working closely with our Medical Team on the next steps.”
